MediaTek supports RISC-V software development

The RISE Project, a fresh open source project to hasten the creation of software for RISC-V across several industry niches, has MediaTek’s enthusiastic backing.RISE, which is being hosted by the Linux Foundation Europe, will assist RISC-V International in advancing its worldwide standards initiatives.

The RISE Project, a new collaborative effort, brings together global industry leaders who are dedicated to expediting the availability of software for high-performance and power-efficient RISC-V cores. These cores are capable of running advanced operating systems across various market segments. The RISE Governing Board comprises renowned names such as Andes, Google, Intel, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, NVIDIA, Qualcomm Technologies, Red Hat, Rivos, Samsung, SiFive, T-Head, and Ventana. Linux Foundation Europe hosts the RISE Project, which aims to support global open standards activities and achievements initiated by RISC-V International.

Amber Huffman, Chair of the RISE Project, expressed excitement about being part of the growing RISC-V community. She noted the increasing popularity of the platform and the significant progress made in various use cases. However, she emphasized the need to support this momentum with performant, secure, reliable, and commercially-ready software. The RISE Project unites leaders who share a sense of urgency in accelerating the readiness of the RISC-V software ecosystem through collaboration with RISC-V International.

Calista Redmond, CEO of RISC-V International, acknowledged the remarkable progress made in RISC-V adoption. She expressed gratitude towards the thousands of engineers contributing upstream and the organizations that are now investing in tools and libraries to support the RISC-V software ecosystem. Redmond emphasized the shared mission of accelerating adoption and highlighted how the collective investment of the community, along with the RISE Project, will further build on the existing momentum.

Members of the RISE Project will contribute financially and provide engineering expertise to address specific software deliverables prioritized by the RISE Technical Steering Committee (TSC). The project’s focus lies in enabling a robust software ecosystem specifically for application processors. This ecosystem includes software development tools, virtualization support, language runtimes, Linux distribution integration, and system firmware. Collaboration will begin upstream with existing open-source communities, following the best practices of the open-source community.

Gabriele Columbro, General Manager of Linux Foundation Europe, emphasized the RISE Project’s dedication to enabling RISC-V through open-source tools and libraries such as LLVM and GCC. This dedication aims to accelerate implementation and time-to-market for RISC-V. Columbro recognized RISC-V as a cornerstone of the European technology and industrial landscape and expressed honor in providing a neutral and trusted home for the RISE Project under Linux Foundation Europe.
