According to a preview of an upcoming DigiTimes report, Apple is reportedly planning to release a new MacBook Pro in the third quarter of 2023, equipped with an upgraded chip manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 3nm process.
The report suggests that this new MacBook Pro will feature a 3nm processor, likely referring to Apple’s next-generation M3 chip, which has not yet been officially announced. The M3 chip is expected to provide significant improvements in performance and power efficiency compared to the current 13-inch MacBook Pro’s M2 chip, which is based on a 5nm process.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentioned in his Power On newsletter that the first Macs with the M3 chip could potentially launch as early as October, indicating that a release in the fourth quarter seems more likely than the third quarter. Nevertheless, it is increasingly probable that Apple will announce the M3 chip later this year, with the next-generation 13-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, and 24-inch iMac being the likely first models to feature the new chip. The release date for an updated version of the 15-inch MacBook Air, which was launched last month, with the M3 chip remains unclear.
The current 13-inch MacBook Pro was last updated with the M2 chip in June 2022, and it retains a design that is approximately seven years old. It is uncertain if the next model will feature any major design changes.
Additionally, it is anticipated that Apple will update the iPad Pro with the M3 chip and an OLED display in the first half of 2024, bringing the 3nm technology to its high-end tablet. Furthermore, next year is expected to see the launch of 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, while an M3 Ultra chip for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro is likely to be introduced in the future.
