Samsung SDI unveils next-gen EV batteries
Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, and Samsung SDI announced their collaboration at the highly anticipated IAA MOBILITY1 2023 event in Munich, Germany, Sept. 5-10. The three Samsung affiliates will present a comprehensive spectrum of automotive technologies to reinvent connected mobility and fascinate global consumers and companies.
Samsung Electronics: Transforming the Future
Samsung Electronics aligns automotive advances from all of its semiconductor business groups for the first time, highlighting the synergy between its memory, system LSI, foundry, and LED technologies. This merger enhances Samsung’s leadership in mobility solutions.
“IAA MOBILITY 2023 serves as an unparalleled platform for us to demonstrate the collective strength and commitment of our individual businesses, built to revolutionise the automotive industry through our expansive suite of semiconductor technologies,” said Samsung Electronics President of Device Solutions Europe Dermot Ryan. “Our shared vision is to collaboratively craft safer, more sustainable and profoundly interconnected automotive experiences for customers and communities worldwide.”
Pioneering Future Mobility Memory Advances
Samsung’s proven memory solutions accelerate data-driven mobility in future vehicles that need superior processing and storage. Samsung will showcase its whole array of automotive-optimized memory solutions at IAA MOBILITY 2023. LPDDR5X,2 GDDR7,3 AutoSSD, and UFS 3.14 devices provide high-performance and high-capacity in infotainment and ADAS with proven auto-grade dependability.
Samsung wants to become the top automotive memory supplier by 2025, enabling fully connected mobility for global consumers with its strong automotive portfolio and ecosystem alliances.
System LSI Enhances In-Car Experience
Next-generation automobiles will focus on in-car entertainment and safety as the automotive industry electrifies and digitalizes. Samsung will showcase a CPU and sensor portfolio geared to these changing needs at IAA MOBILITY 2023. Samsung’s premium in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) Exynos Auto V920 processor smooths graphics-rich films and games on numerous monitors.
Samsung’s ISOCELL Auto sensors offer 360-degree automobile vision from front (ISOCELL Auto 1H1) to rear and surround (ISOCELL Auto 4AC), assuring driver and passenger safety. Samsung will exhibit in-cabin sensor technologies for driver and passenger monitoring systems that can identify and notify harmful driving situations including sleepiness, weariness, and distraction.
Foundry Solutions Advance Automotive Semiconductor Frontiers
Samsung’s Foundry Business has prioritised automotive innovation and production to match the growing automotive semiconductor market. Samsung Foundry will showcase its latest automotive design solutions at IAA MOBILITY 2023, including system-on-chips (SoCs) for IVI and ADAS, power management ICs (PMICs), battery management ICs (BMICs), and automotive microcontrollers (MCUs).
Samsung will also present its automotive process technology roadmap, aiming to mass produce its four-nanometer (nm) process (SF4A6) by 2025 and its 2nm process (SF2A7) by 2026. Samsung Foundry is strengthening its analogue, memory interface, high-speed interface, security, and die to die (D2D) IP portfolio and design infrastructure to support this ambition.
New LED Technologies for Future Vehicles
Samsung will also showcase its powerful and customised LED lighting solutions for electric and driverless cars. The PixCell LED8 intelligent adaptive driving beam (ADB) allows automobile makers to develop smaller lights with accurate and selective lighting management.
Samsung Display: OLEDs Improve Car Experience
Samsung’s next-gen Micro LED technology, which delivers Full HD resolution on a 0.25-inch panel, is excellent for ultra-high-resolution head-up displays (HUDs) and AR glasses for driver information viewing. Mini LED technology, an evolutionary vehicle-to-everything (V2X) solution, unlocks elaborate animated signal effects to improve communication with other cars and pedestrians.
Samsung Display is making its car show debut at IAA Mobility 2023, showcasing its display leadership with a unique installation that showcases OLED technology’s various benefits. This supports the company’s goal of becoming a top OLED display vendor for next-generation automobiles when LCDs are replaced.
Visitors to the Samsung Display stand may compare OLEDs and LCDs at the Safe Driving Centre. Participants will learn that OLEDs’ True Black (VESA-Certified) may improve driver vision and safety in dark settings.
The exhibit will also demonstrate OLEDs‘ low power usage since they only light up pixels where the colour emerges, unlike LCDs. As electric cars (EVs) become more prevalent, this trait becomes increasingly significant. Additionally, guests may see how OLED technology improves car interiors. OLEDs may be twisted and curved to fit the car’s interior and are lighter and smaller than LCDs, allowing for more design freedom.
Next Mobility Projects exhibits future OLED displays like the Flex S, a multi-foldable display that folds into a S shape with one side within and the other outward. It may be carried like a smartphone and enlarged to 12.4 inches for vehicle dashboards. A rollable display that extends more than five times on the vertical axis for rear seat entertainment (RSE) systems and a slidable display that stretches the screen on both sides are other new goods on exhibit.
Samsung SDI: Innovative Batteries for Electric Vehicles
Samsung SDI will present “super gap”9 battery solutions for future EVs at IAA MOBILITY 2023, its sixth IAA attendance. Engaging top European R&D personnel is another focus for the organisation.
In the PRiMX10 Zone, “PRiMX, Experience the Best,” Samsung SDI booth visitors may view the company’s technical highlights. The zone will include next-generation items such the all-solid-state battery, 46-phi cylindrical battery, nickel manganese (NMX) battery, lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) battery, and premium-segment solutions. Samsung SDI will showcase its sustainable future projects in the ESG11 Zone with the long-term objective of “To make the world sustainable through our innovative technology.”
Samsung SDI is also introducing cobalt-free battery solutions including NMX and LMFP to meet mass-market electric vehicle demands for safety and cost-effectiveness. The new form factor repositions cathode and anode connections to the side for best space savings, performance, and safety.
Samsung SDI President and CEO Yoon-ho Choi will meet with important European clients at IAA MOBILITY 2023. Choi will attend SDI’s Tech & job (T&C) Forum, a job fair that showcases the company’s technology and connects with potential hires. Munich hosts the Forum for the first time following Seoul last month. It happened twice in Seoul and New York last year.
Europe is home to major automakers and component producers, making it a key market for the future EV sector, said Choi. “Using our unrivalled technologies, we will constantly provide our key European customers with products of the highest safety and quality.”
