The initial release of WatsonX.ai features the Slate family of models, which follows an encoder-only architecture. These models excel in enterprise natural language processing (NLP) tasks such as customer feedback classification and information extraction from large documents. Although fine-tuning requires task-specific labeled data, the Slate models provide an optimal cost-performance trade-off for non-generative use cases. Fine-tuning is facilitated through Jupyter notebooks and APIs.

Prompt Lab: Expanding Capabilities

WatsonX.ai incorporates the Prompt Lab, enabling users to interact with various prompts using prompt engineering on generative AI models. This feature supports both zero-shot prompting and few-shot prompting, empowering users to accomplish diverse NLP functional tasks. Within the Prompt Lab, users can access IBM-vetted pre-trained open-source foundation models, including encoder-decoder and decoder-only large language models.

Capabilities within the Prompt Lab include:

  1. Summarize: Transform domain-specific text into personalized overviews and capture key points.
  2. Generate: Generate tailored text content for specific purposes such as marketing campaigns, job descriptions, blogs or articles, and email drafting support.
  3. Extract: Analyze unstructured text content to surface insights in specialized domains, such as audit acceleration, SEC 10K fact extraction, and user research findings.
  4. Classify: Read and classify written input, even with minimal or zero examples, enabling tasks like customer complaint sorting, threat and vulnerability classification, sentiment analysis, and customer segmentation.
  5. Question & Answering: Create a question-answering feature based on a set of documents or dynamic content, providing assistance grounded on product-specific knowledge.

Considering the diverse enterprise use cases, WatsonX.ai acknowledges that a single foundation model might not be suitable for all scenarios. Consequently, the platform plans to release five open-source models sourced from Hugging Face as part of the Prompt Lab. Furthermore, future releases will offer capabilities for prompt tuning and fine-tuning models, along with access to an expanded range of IBM-trained proprietary foundation models for specialized domains and tasks.

Comprehensive Toolkit and Collaboration

Within WatsonX.ai, users can leverage open-source frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, and scikit-learn alongside IBM’s comprehensive machine learning and data science toolkit.
