SES and SpeQtral Sign MoU Quantum-Secure Communications

SES and SpeQtral Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Promote Worldwide Quantum-Secure Communications

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by SES and SpeQtral to create an interoperable optical ground station (OGS) in order to implement Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) between Asia and Europe via long-distance satellites.

In accordance with the agreement, SES and SpeQtral will be able to connect their present and upcoming QKD satellite missions by developing an interoperable OGS. This will facilitate easier access to and diversify the supply of long-distance QKD to end users in Asia, Europe, and other future compatible ground stations across the globe. The proposed OGS’s integration with Singapore’s fiber-QKD network will facilitate future customers’ network integration with satellite QKD networks and show a workable route to enable global QKD connectivity after the QKD satellites are operational.

The partnership between SpeQtral and SES will eliminate barriers to global deployment and acceptance, close a significant gap in the availability of QKD services, and lower expenses related to quantum communication infrastructure.

The first of these OGS is expected to be constructed in Singapore, which is currently home to a thriving seedbed of quantum-safe initiatives, such as the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA)-led National Quantum Safe Network Plus (NQSN+) program.

SES and SpeQtral’s QKD Proficiency

A satellite-based QKD solution will be necessary to create a linked global QKD network from fiber-based QKD networks being installed in major cities worldwide.

By operating in Sun-Synchronous Orbits roughly 500 kilometres from the Earth’s surface, QKD satellites provide global connectivity and set the stage for extremely secure communications in the future of quantum computing.

The EAGLE-1 project is being developed by SES and a group of European partners to provide early access to long-distance QKD for extremely secure data transfers. Co-funded by the European Commission and ESA state contributions, the project consists of both ground and satellite infrastructure and demonstrates Europe’s dedication to developing quantum-secure communications.

The Office for Space Technology & Industry, Singapore (OSTIn) is supporting SpeQtral’s operations on two QKD satellites, SpeQtre and SpeQtral-1. A combined Singapore-UK mission called SpeQtre will launch SpeQtral’s space-qualified quantum-optics system, which makes it possible to create quantum-secure encryption keys. Because of OSTIn’s robust support for technical advancement in sophisticated space-based capabilities, local firms like SpeQtral have established significant international collaborations that can potentially influence the worldwide quantum-security market.

The CEOs of the two businesses signed the Memorandum of Understanding in Betzdorf, Luxembourg, while Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam was in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on a state visit.
