AMD unveils lower-clocked Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 7 7840HX laptop CPUs
It has been rumoured that AMD is working on laptop versions of the Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 7 7840HX Dragon Range processors with lower clock speeds and reduced power requirements.
Both the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 7 7840HX will have lower clock speeds and lower power consumption designs for laptops in the Dragon Range.
Golden Pig Upgrade over at Bilibili is the source of this information. He states that AMD is intending to make a gentle upgrade of their current Dragon Range “Ryzen 7045HX” CPU range with two new models, despite the fact that the naming system could be quite confusing to consumers.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX and the Ryzen 7 7840HX are the two models that have been cited; however, we are aware that the Ryzen 7040 SKUs belong to the Phoenix family, whilst these two SKUs are said to belong to the Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range family.
Because the core configurations of both models will be identical to those of previously released models like as the Ryzen 9 7945HX and the Ryzen 7 7845HX, the only distinction between them will be that their clock speeds will be somewhat slower.
The Ryzen 7 7840HX will have 12 Zen 4 cores, 24 threads, 12 MB of L2, and 64 MB of L3 cache, while the Ryzen 9 7940HX will have 16 Zen 4 cores, 32 threads, 16 MB of L2, and 64 MB of L3 cache. In comparison, the Ryzen 9 7940HX will have 16 Zen 4 cores, 32 threads, 16 MB of L2, and 64 MB of L3 cache.
Since the currently available SKUs have clock frequencies of up to 5.4 GHz, it is possible that the newest SKUs will have clocks of about 5.0 GHz. In light of the fact that these two chips are rated with a default TDP of 55W and have the potential to go up to 75W (cTDP), it will be fascinating to see just how much power AMD can optimise for them.
Because AMD is also anticipated to permit Dragon Range X3D supply to other OEMs, it is likely that there will be an increased number of laptops that use the Dragon Range by the time CES 2024 rolls around. At the event, the firm will also reveal its next-generation Ryzen 8000 Strix Point and Hawk Point APUs, despite the fact that the former won’t be ready until sometime around the middle of 2024.
Even though some manufacturers accuse AMD of undersupply, AMD is now unable to match the demand for its existing Phoenix APUs. However, given that TSMC’s 4nm is highly restricted, we can’t totally blame AMD for this issue.
