Google Assistant Gets an AI Makeover with Gemini on Mobiles

Gemini is the latest version of the Assistant experience on mobile devices.

Google is updating Google Assistant users on mobile devices to Gemini, which will provide a new type of assistance made possible solely by artificial intelligence.

An assistant should be sensitive to your needs and aware of your surroundings. It ought to work with the programs and services you now utilise. Additionally, it should increase your creativity, productivity, and level of curiosity.

With the release of Google Assistant, speech recognition and natural language processing technology opened up a more organic method to use Google for assistance. Google is currently experiencing another platform transition due to generative AI, which is changing how we use technology.

Google Assistant’s future

Later this year, the original Google Assistant will no longer be available for new downloads from mobile app stores or on the majority of mobile devices. In the upcoming months, Google will be upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini.

It is also upgrading tablets, automobiles, and gadgets that link to your phone like watches and headphones to Gemini. With Gemini’s help, it also introduced a fresh experience to household electronics like TVs, speakers, and screens. Google Assistant will keep functioning on these devices until that time.

Next steps for Gemini

Google has made the Gemini app available in more than 200 countries and more than 40 languages since its launch last year. It is still working to enhance the daily Gemini experience, particularly for users who have grown dependent on Google Assistant. More of the most requested functions, like playing music, setting timers, and taking action from your lock screen, are now supported in the upgraded app.

Yet, Gemini can offer a very different kind of assistance, and its powers extend well beyond those of the Google Assistant. Only artificial intelligence (AI) can enable features like Deep Research, which turns Gemini into a personal research assistant, and Gemini Live, which allows for free-flowing, multimodal interactions.

The Google assistant

Machine learning and artificial intelligence more especially, fields like natural language processing, speech recognition, and translation have been responsible for many of these developments, which have enabled us to create a user experience that is more helpful and assistive. These components enable you to take a picture of a Chinese sign and see it translated into English, making Google speech recognition the most accurate in the world.

All of these fields are seeing rapid advancement, and we think this is a turning point. Individuals are using Google more and more in a natural way, expecting it to assist them with their everyday chores rather than just finding information.

Conversational: a continuous, two-way exchange between you and Google that comprehends your environment and assists you in completing tasks. It makes it simple to purchase movie tickets while on the go, locate the ideal restaurant for your family to have a fast meal before the start of the film, and then assist you in getting to the theatre. It’s a Google for you, by you.

The assistant is an ambient experience that functions flawlessly in a variety of settings and on many devices. Thus, no matter where you are or what the situation, you may ask Google for assistance. It expands upon the years of work we have put into thoroughly comprehending user enquiries.

It provided a sneak peek at two new products that will soon allow you to use Google Assistant.

The Google Home

A voice-activated device called Google Home allows you to have the Google assistant in any room of your home. You can use conversational speech to perform daily work, enjoy entertainment, and obtain answers from Google. You may ask Google Home to turn on your lights, check your flight, set an oven timer or play a music with a simple voice command. Its bases can be customised in a variety of colours and materials to complement your environment.

Duo and Allo

Allo is a new messaging software that also includes the Google assistant, allowing you to communicate with it directly in one-on-one or group chats. You can request items like your daily schedule or pictures from your most recent trip because the helper is familiar with your world. In one thread, you can ask the assistant to recommend places in the area if you’re having dinner with friends.

Emojis, stickers, and creative photo editing are just a few of the entertaining ways to add expression to your conversations with Allo. Smart Reply also allows you to propose responses to messages based on context. Additionally, there is an Incognito mode with message expiration, end-to-end encryption, and discreet notifications.

Duo, is a companion app for one-to-one video calling, in addition to Allo. Its objective with Duo is to improve the speed and dependability of video calls, even on weaker network speeds. It has included a function called Knock Knock that allows you to see the other caller’s live video before you answer.

The best part is that Allo and Duo are both based on your phone number, so you can talk to anyone, whether they’re on iOS or Android.

VR, Wear, Android N, and Instant Apps

Google revealed what Android N will bring, including improved graphics and effects performance, lower battery and storage usage, background system update downloads, simplified notifications to allow you to get through them more quickly, and updated emojis, including 72 new ones.

It has developed a brand-new mobile VR platform called Daydream that runs on top of Android N. It is working on future phones with Android manufacturers, and it is sharing concepts with them for a VR viewer and controller that will be incredibly comfortable, immersive, and easy to use. YouTube, Street View, Play Movies, Google Photos, and the Play Store are just a few of the Google apps and games that will be available on Daydream.

It also previewed Android Wear 2.0, which has a revamped user interface and stand-alone apps that work on the watch regardless of phone location or condition.

Finally, Google launched Android Instant Apps, which let you use Android apps without installing them.

Fire Base

Google’s most complete developer product to date, Firebase, had a significant expansion today. Beyond a mobile backend, the platform helps developers create high-quality apps on iOS, Android, and the mobile web more quickly, increase their user base, and make more money.
