The Deep Field experience is an immersive art app created by Australian artists and creative technologists Tin Nguyen and Edward Cutting of Tin&Ed. It is powered by iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and aims to inspire global co-creation and connection to the environment. The experience combines augmented reality (AR) and sonic elements to allow students and families to co-create and connect in real-time, reimagining the environment.
Participants in the Deep Field experience use the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to draw their own flora and fauna, experimenting with colors, shapes, and textures. These designs are then added to a global database, where they become part of a new ecosystem created by participants from around the world. Using the LiDAR Scanner on the iPad Pro, the participants’ artworks are transformed into 3D plant structures that appear to trail across floors, walls, and ceilings, creating an immersive natural world.
The Deep Field experience encourages audiences to think about the planet differently and consider new perspectives. It allows participants to explore the invisible worlds of plants, from ancient species to imagined ones. The app also features a UV mode that enables users to view their creations as if they were pollinators, adding another dimension to their newly created world.
Tin&Ed, the multidisciplinary artists behind Deep Field, are known for creating vibrant and interactive experiences that explore the boundaries between art, design, and technology. The Deep Field experience aims to empower people to bring their creativity to life while also raising awareness about the need to protect the planet.
To bring the Deep Field experience to life, Tin&Ed utilized a combination of Apple devices and software. The power and portability of the iPad Pro, combined with the precision of the Apple Pencil, allow for a seamless and immersive creative experience. The app itself was designed using Apple’s ARKit framework, which integrates the depth-sensing features of the iPad Pro to create realistic AR experiences. The state-of-the-art LiDAR Scanner on the iPad Pro enhances the depth-sensing capabilities, resulting in faster and more realistic AR experiences.
Deep Field debuted at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and the Getty Center in Los Angeles. It offers an interactive and multisensory experience, including a soundscape by audio naturalist Martyn Stewart, which features forgotten and extinct species. The experience invites children and visitors to engage with nature, art, and technology, fostering a sense of wonder, curiosity, and connection to the natural world.
After its initial showings in Sydney and Los Angeles, the Deep Field experience is set to embark on a world tour, with planned stops in Europe and Asia, including the ArtScience Museum in Singapore.
