AMD EPYC 8004 Processors: Turning Next-Gen Cloud Deals

EPYC 8004 processors for intelligent edge

New AMD EPYC 8004 Series CPUs complete the 4th Gen AMD EPYC CPU family of workload-optimized processors. The “Zen 4c” core in these new processors allows hardware providers to create energy-efficient and differentiated platforms that can power applications from the intelligent edge, such as retail, manufacturing, and telco, to the data center for cloud services, storage, and others.

“The new EPYC 8004 Series processors extend AMD leadership in single socket platforms by offering excellent CPU energy efficiency in a package tuned to meet space and power-constrained infrastructure,” said AMD Server Business senior vice president and general manager Dan McNamara. AMD has produced numerous generations of data center CPUs with high efficiency, performance, and unique features. With our 4th Gen EPYC CPU portfolio, we dominate across business, cloud, intelligent edge, technical computing, and more.”

Efficiency and Performance for Traditional and Intelligent Edge Data Centers

AMD EPYC 8004 series processors provide the 4th Gen EPYC family’s leading performance and efficiency to markets that value performance, energy efficiency, platform density, and quiet operations. The AMD EPYC 8004 series CPUs provide consumers and partners:

Intelligent Edge energy efficiency is excellent. The EPYC 8004 series processor’s efficient “Zen 4c” core and new SP6 socket simplify memory and I/O capabilities, delivering up to 2x greater SPECpowerb performance per system watt than the competition’s top networking model.

Performance balance. AMD EPYC 8004 series processors provide balanced performance and energy efficiency at the edge in an industry that needs the highest performance per watt for space and infrastructure limited applications. The EPYC 8534P outperforms similar networking products by 2.4x frames/hour/system watt in video encoding. For IoT Edge gateway workloads, an EPYC 8024P-powered server with eight cores may achieve ~1.8x the total throughput per 8kW rack compared to the competition.iii

Intelligent Edge Deployment Savings Optimization. Instead of data center racks, intelligent edge deployments use smaller server nodes. When used in an intelligent edge deployment of one, three, or 10 servers, an AMD EPYC 8004 series processor-based server may save clients thousands of dollars in energy expenses over five years due to its higher core density and throughput.iv

A Strong, Innovative Ecosystem

Many OEMs and partners unveiled unique systems and solutions that use the AMD EPYC 8004 series processor’s broad power and temperature range to support deployments in dense data centers, city telco buildings, and extreme physical environments like factory floors.

DELL launched the PowerEdge C6615 server. This system’s efficient form-factor optimizes scale-out applications like containers and microservices for excellent performance and low TCO.

“The Dell PowerEdge C6615 with AMD EPYC Gen4 CPUs is purpose-built to deliver our best performance per watt, per dollar in a density-optimized form factor,” said Travis Vigil, senior vice president, product management, Infrastructure Solutions Group, Dell Technologies “The solution optimizes compute performance in air-cooled environments without affecting power or cooling. We help cloud service providers intelligently monitor their systems and offer more effective computing services using Dell OpenManage Enterprise software.

Ericsson believes the AMD EPYC 8004 series processors can accelerate Cloud RAN computation and handle massive traffic growth on mobile networks in an energy-efficient and performant way. The processors’ core density and AVX512 capabilities allow them to manage significant site traffic with FDD and TDD spectrum.

According to Ericsson’s Head of Cloud RAN, Mårten Lerner, the company is committed to creating cutting-edge solutions in conjunction with partners and customers to advance Open RAN. Ericsson views this launch as a milestone in our commitment to accelerating Cloud RAN technologies in energy efficiency, performance, and high-capacity solutions via our strategic partnership with AMD. This allows us to provide our clients alternatives on their Cloud RAN journey and increase flexibility in Cloud RAN installations to improve performance and secure high-capacity solutions to meet 5G connectivity and beyond needs.

Lenovo introduced its latest flagship edge-optimized server, the Lenovo ThinkEdge SE455 V3, which offers best-in-class performance, storage, and expandability for large and demanding edge AI workloads and is the most energy-efficient server available.

Lenovo continues to push the boundaries of what is possible at the edge with groundbreaking innovation and design that delivers AI directly to your place of business,” said Lenovo Vice President and General Manager of Edge Computing and Telecom Charles Ferland. The Lenovo ThinkEdge SE455 V3 uses the new AMD EPYC 8004 series processor to unlock data intelligence and enable next-generation AI applications while lowering power consumption in a compact, quiet design that works discreetly even in the most challenging remote settings.

Microsoft Azure said, “We are pleased about the launch of AMD EPYC 8004 Series processors. “The EPYC 8004 Series’ power, performance, and environmental capabilities will benefit retail and manufacturing customers running Microsoft Azure services at the edge,” said Bernardo Caldas, CVP, Azure Edge PM. “We look forward to launching these new solutions with AMD and OEM partners.”

New Supermicro edge systems use AMD EPYC 8004 CPUs. These solutions for edge and telecom data centers use Supermicro H13 WIO Servers for high performance and energy economy.

WW FAE, solutions and business, said Supermicro standard rack mount and NEBS-compliant short-depth systems with AMD EPYC 8004 series CPUs are appropriate for different workloads. These processors’ improved performance per core, lower TDP, and extended lifecycle support, combined with Supermicro’s innovative and energy-efficient servers with AC/DC power options, provide superior value for our customers and support intelligent edge and next-generation Telco markets.
