The highly anticipated AMD HYPR-RX, a solution combining three performance-focused technologies, has not been launched by AMD as promised in the first half of 2023. Despite appearing to be a relatively easy feature to implement, the release of HYPR-RX has been delayed.
HYPR-RX was designed to offer a convenient one-click performance mode based on three AMD technologies: Radeon Super Resolution, Radeon Boost, and Radeon Anti-Lag. Radeon Super Resolution operates similarly to FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0 and is based on the same algorithm. However, instead of relying on game developers to implement AMD upscaling technology, the company found a way to upscale the entire frame across all games at the driver level. This feature is commonly utilized on low-power gaming consoles like the Steam Deck.
Radeon Boost, another component of HYPR-RX, dynamically lowers the resolution when motion is detected in a frame. This can enhance responsiveness and performance for dynamic and fast-paced content. Radeon Boost leverages a DirectX12 feature called Variable Rate Shading in newer games.
The third pillar of HYPR-RX is Anti-Lag, which is AMD’s equivalent implementation of NVIDIA Reflex. Both technologies are designed to minimize input lag and efficiently control CPU workload. Ultimately, gamers experience improved responsiveness, particularly in dynamic scenes.
According to AMD’s demonstrations, HYPR-RX would act as a built-in profile within AMD Software. Gamers would have the option to enable or disable individual features or globally enforce optimized settings through HYPR-RX.
However, it is currently not possible to enable all features simultaneously. For instance, Radeon Super Resolution and Radeon Boost are mutually exclusive and cannot be used together, as indicated by a message in Radeon software. The same applies to Radeon Boost and Anti-Lag, as these features also cannot be used concurrently.
AMD announced HYPR-RX alongside FSR 3.0 in November of the previous year. Since then, the company has remained tight-lipped about both FSR3 and HYPR-RX, and there is currently no release date provided for either technology.
