At the sixth World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held in Shanghai, China on July 7, 2023, the “Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing” (AIM Global) was officially launched by UNIDO, Huawei, and other partners. The alliance, led by UNIDO, aims to foster the use of AI in industry and manufacturing by integrating public and private partners.
During the inaugural ceremony, UNIDO Director General Mr. Gerd Müller emphasised the need of everyone working together to guarantee that advances in AI are safe, ethical, sustainable, and inclusive. AIM Global understands the necessity of bridging the digital divide across nations and sectors in order to ensure that everyone benefits from the AI revolution. The alliance’s goal is to change the AI landscape and create a future in which AI is a force for good, accessible to all, and in accordance with shared values.
Huawei, as a strategic partner of AIM Global, expressed pride in their collaboration with UNIDO and other alliance partners. They highlighted their commitment to using AI to bring new momentum to industry development and their goal of developing AI solutions that effectively serve all industries and support scientific research.
AIM Global will leverage UNIDO’s local networks and insights from its investment and technology promotion offices, which offer support to SMEs globally. This understanding of SME challenges across sectors will inform AIM Global’s strategy to maximize its impact. UNIDO is dedicated to supporting innovative efforts that enhance industrial competitiveness and sustainable development through AI.
The alliance will operate as a hub for communication, information exchange, and the creation of best practises. It will concentrate on four main areas: the development and promotion of ethical guidelines for AI use, the dissemination of policy recommendations to governments and international organisations, the research and development of AI technologies specifically geared towards industry and manufacturing, and the promotion of best practises for AI adoption in these sectors.
Huawei will actively support AIM Global by sharing case studies on industrial AI implementation, insights from their research and development efforts, and making their network of global experts available.
This initiative aims to accelerate the responsible and beneficial adoption of AI in industry and manufacturing, fostering innovation and ensuring that the benefits of AI are accessible to all.
