In the worldwide study “Rewiring the Telecom Mindset: How CSPs are Gaining Network Advantage with Cloud and AI,” 750 network executives from top providers, including Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, Telstra, Verizon, and Vodafone, share their thoughts on the significance of implementing cloud and AI-driven strategies to maintain an advantage in the quickly changing telecom market and provide improved network performance.

Important conclusions include

  • Network performance is the top priority for 79% of telco executives polled, followed by network modernisation.
  • Cloud readiness can boost agility and unlock on-demand resources for advanced AI-driven capabilities. Of those recognised as pioneering technology innovators, 62% use traditional AI for network planning, compared to their peers’ 40% adoption rate, and 54% incorporate generative AI into network planning, which is twice as high as their peers.
  • In the past 12 months, 55% of respondents claim to have experienced a network security breach. Only 42% of CEOs, however, rank network security as their top challenge for the upcoming three years.
  • Executives questioned anticipate that network investments in cloud implementation would rise by almost 20% over the next three years, followed by classical AI by 16% and generative AI by nearly 19%.

In order to seize network monetisation opportunities and maintain their competitiveness, the report also highlights the necessity for CSPs to look beyond technology adoption and change their culture. This entails taking measured, audacious risks, encouraging teamwork, growing from mistakes, and establishing a proactive attitude towards innovation.

Methodology

In collaboration with Oxford Economics, the IBM Institute for Business Value polled 750 executives in the telecom sector across 25 nations. Network monetisation leaders were among the positions held by CTOs, Chief Networks Officers, Heads of Network Planning and Architecture, Network Operations, Radio Access Network, Core Network, Network Security, Network Engineering, Service Assurance, and Network IT Systems.

Based on respondents’ assessments of how cloud computing affects network properties and their use of AI technology, a two-step cluster analysis was carried out. Eight network performance characteristics (ranked on a scale from -100% to +10,000%) were among the clustering variables: deployment time, maintenance costs, scalability, flexibility, reliability, availability, and security. The analysis also included the number of use cases in which companies implemented generative AI and traditional AI, including machine learning, across 17 different network management domains, from field service operations to network design.

By using a clustering technique, a clear leading segment was found that was distinguished by the greater advantages of adopting cloud computing as well as the wider application of AI and generative AI solutions in network operations. In order to confirm and further examine the survey results, 14 executives from top telecom businesses were chosen to participate in one-on-one interviews.
