Understanding Hitachi Astemo AI Object Detection

According to a statement issued by AMD, the industry-leading mobility supplier Hitachi Astemo has decided to use the adaptive computing technology developed by AMD to power its new stereo-format, forward-looking camera that will be used for adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. Because of this, the visual capabilities of cars of the future generation will improve, which will contribute to an improvement in the total degree of safety provided by these vehicles.

In the camera, the stereo and monocular image processing are both supported by the multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC) that is manufactured by AMD Automotive and called XA Zynq UltraScale. This allows the camera to recognize things over 120 degrees, which is a 3X larger angle than its previous generation of cameras. This adds to an improvement in overall safety as a result of the camera’s enhanced ability to identify items across a broader area.

Hitachi Astemo Limited’s deputy head of the ECU solution business unit, Powertrain and Safety Systems Business Division, Makoto Kudo, said that “The AMD Automotive XA Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC is incredibly versatile and allows us to add multiple safety-critical features in our forward camera system.” Hitachi Astemo Limited is the entity that made this announcement.

“The high-performance, highly scalable, and configurable silicon that AMD has to offer is more than capable of satisfying the extraordinarily complicated image signal processing requirements of our forward camera system.” The versatility and functionality of the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC platform, as well as its potential to fulfill strict functional safety standards, were all factors that played a role in our choice to partner with AMD.

“Hitachi Astemo has clearly demonstrated its technological leadership with the development of this stereo forward camera that utilizes AMD adaptive computing technology,” said Yousef Khalilollahi, corporate vice president, APAC Sales, for AMD. “This camera was created using AMD adaptive computing technology.” [Further citation is required] “With the development of this stereo forward camera, Hitachi Astemo has unmistakably demonstrated that it is the leader in terms of technological innovation.” “AMD is proud to offer the foundational technology in these camera systems,” which adds to greater safety and the prevention of accidents, both of which are essential aspects of automotive technologies, according to the company’s website.

Camera systems are an important component of both completely autonomous driving systems and increased driver assistance systems that are placed in vehicles. This is true for both fully autonomous driving systems and enhanced driver assistance systems. The use of cameras that are pointed in front of the vehicle is essential to the success of these systems since it allows vehicles to reliably recognize objects and persons located in their surroundings. The Hitachi Astemo system, which is powered by AMD, mixes stereo camera image-processing methods with artificial intelligence in order to provide object detection and also to provide video-based driver assistance systems. This allows the system to offer both of these features.

The Role of AMD in the Automotive Sector

As the rate of innovation in the automotive industry continues to pick up steam at a faster and faster clip, there is an increasing need for high-performance computing, compute acceleration, and graphics technology. AMD is now in the driver’s seat at this crucial juncture as a result of the comprehensive product range that it offers consisting of high-performance CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and Adaptive SoCs. AMD provides automobile manufacturers with a one-stop shop for silicon and software solutions, which enables the automobile manufacturers to power in-vehicle entertainment systems, sophisticated driver assistance systems, autonomous driving, and networking applications in where functional safety is of the highest importance.
