Samsung Electronics recently held its 7th annual Samsung Foundry Forum (SFF) in 2023, where it shared its latest foundry technology innovations and business strategy. The theme of the forum was “Innovation Beyond Boundaries,” focusing on addressing customer needs in the AI era through advanced semiconductor technology. The event had over 700 guests, including customers, partners, and 38 companies that hosted booths to showcase the latest trends in the foundry industry.
Dr. Siyoung Choi, President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting customer needs and announced the following as part of Samsung Foundry’s business strategy:
Expanded applications of its 2-nanometer (nm) process and specialty process: Samsung plans to begin mass production of its 2nm process for mobile applications in 2025 and expand to high-performance computing (HPC) in 2026 and automotive applications in 2027. The 2nm process offers a 12% performance increase, 25% power efficiency improvement, and 5% area reduction compared to the previous 3nm process.
Expanded production capacity at Pyeongtaek fab Line 3 (P3): Samsung Foundry is increasing its clean room capacity by 7.3 times by 2027 compared to 2021. The company aims to begin mass production of foundry products for mobile and other applications at Pyeongtaek Line 3 in the second half of the year.
Launch of the “Multi-Die Integration (MDI) Alliance”: Samsung is forming the MDI Alliance in collaboration with partner companies and major players in memory, substrate packaging, and testing. The alliance aims to lead innovation in stacking technology and develop packaging solutions tailored to various applications, such as mobile and HPC.
Continued progress in the foundry ecosystem with Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem (SAFE) partners: Samsung is fostering collaboration and mutual growth within the foundry ecosystem. It collaborates with electronic design automation (EDA), design solution partners (DSP), outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT), cloud, and IP providers to offer design tools, packaging solutions, and IPs for customer needs in AI, HPC, and automotive applications.
Samsung Foundry plans to expand its production base to Yongin, South Korea, and continue its efforts to meet customer demands, enhance fabless support, and accelerate innovation through partnerships. The company will host the Samsung Foundry Forum in South Korea, Europe, and Asia throughout the year to engage with customers in each region.
