Intel Xeon Platinum 8558U Specifications
There are hints of Intel’s future Xeon Platinum 8558U “Emerald Rapids” CPU, which has 48 cores and a large cache.
The Xeon Platinum 8558U chip has 77% more cache than its 4th generation Sapphire Rapids predecessor, the Intel Emerald Rapids “5th Gen Xeon” CPUs provide a significant increase in cache.
Intel’s 5th generation Emerald Rapids CPUs will go on sale on December 14 of next month. It is anticipated that the new CPU family would remain compatible with current LGA 4677 socketed systems, but will offer a significant boost in cache and AI capabilities along with a minor increase in cores/threads.
The specifications of the 5th generation Emerald Rapids SKUs have already been reported before, and the Xeon Platinum 8558U has just been added to the Geekbench 6 database. This entry indicates a significant increase in cache count compared to its predecessors.
The specs of the 8558U Xeon include 96 threads, a base clock of 2.0 GHz, and a total of 48 cores based on the Raptor Cove P-Core architecture. Since the CPU cannot turbo above 2.0 GHz, this performance is not an accurate depiction of the processor. The Supermicro X13SEDW-F motherboard, which is a component of the Eagle Stream platform and can accommodate CPUs with a maximum TDP of 350W and up to 4 TB of RAM, was used for testing.
The Intel Xeon Platinum 8558U “Emerald Rapids” has a large 260 MB pool of L3 cache, and each die cluster has two MB of L2 cache spread over 48 MB pools. With 96 MB of L2 cache, that comes to 356 MB total, which is 77% more than the Sapphire Rapids chips, which in the identical 48 core configurations give up to 201 MB (105 MB L3 + 96 MB L2) of cache. The L3 cache has increased by 2.48 times.
Similar cache count improvements over their predecessors are also seen in the recently leaked Xeon Platinum 8592+ and Xeon Platinum 8580 “Emerald Rapids” CPUs, with the top chip providing 448 MB of cache.
- The Emerald Rapids 48 Core has a 356 MB L3 cache in addition to a 96 MB L2 cache.
- 105 MB L3 Cache + 96 MB L2 Cache = 201 MB for Sapphire Rapids 48 Core
- GPU 48 MB L2 Cache + 192 MB L3 Cache = 240 MB EPYC Genoa 48 Core
On December 14th, Intel’s 5th generation Emerald Rapids CPUs for the Xeon Data Center sector are anticipated to launch. These CPUs will have several enhancements, including:
- Three times as big an LLC cache
- Enhanced Retention Speed
- Increased Processor Core Count—Up to 64 Cores
- Workload improvements (Intel AE) for CXL Type 3 high bandwidth interface
- Enhanced Power Mode
- Up to 17% of overall performance/wattage Utilize Intel Accelerator Engines to offload more CPU cores for increased power efficiency.
- Significant increase in performance for both inference and training Intel AMX with integrated AI acceleration Out-of-the-box with optimized SW stacks
As the debut draws nearer, stay tuned for further details including performance benchmarks and comprehensive specs in the upcoming month.
