Apple Expands Self Repair

Starting June 21, 2023, Apple is expanding its Self Service Repair program to include the iPhone 14 lineup and additional Mac models, such as the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro powered by the M2 chip. Self Service Repair, which was introduced in April 2022, allows individuals with experience in repairing electronic devices to access the same resources used by Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Service Providers.

The program provides access to repair manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools necessary for performing repairs. This means that users who are confident in their repair skills can now undertake certain repairs on their own using official Apple components.

To ensure that repairs are done correctly and with genuine parts, Apple has introduced a post-repair software tool called System Configuration. This tool authenticates the use of genuine Apple parts, updates firmware, and calibrates components to ensure optimal performance and quality. For repairs involving biometric authentication like Touch ID or Face ID, System Configuration securely links the biometric sensors to the device’s Secure Enclave on the logic board, ensuring both device security and customer privacy.

Previously, users had to contact the Self Service Repair support team to run the final step of the repair process. However, with the latest update, Self Service Repair users can now initiate the System Configuration process themselves by placing their devices into Diagnostics mode and following the onscreen prompts. The support team will still be available to assist if needed.

In addition to the new iPhone 14 lineup and Mac models, Self Service Repair is also being expanded to include repairs for the TrueDepth camera and top speaker of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups, as well as Mac desktops with the M1 chip. The availability of Self Service Repair is currently limited to the United States, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Apple’s Self Service Repair program is part of the company’s broader efforts to improve access to repairs. By empowering individuals with repair skills, Apple aims to extend the lifespan of its products, benefiting both users and the environment. However, it’s important to note that for most users who lack experience in electronic device repairs, seeking assistance from professional authorized repair providers with certified technicians and genuine Apple parts remains the safest and most reliable option.

Over the past few years, Apple has significantly expanded its service locations, with nearly double the number of locations now having access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training. This includes more than 4,500 Independent Repair Providers globally and a network of over 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers, supporting over 100,000 active technicians.
