Presenting NextGenAI: A collaboration to use AI to enhance research and education
OpenAI is establishing NextGenAI, a first-of-its-kind collaboration with 15 top research institutes committed to leveraging AI to speed up scientific discoveries and revolutionise education.
AI has the potential to advance both research and teaching, but only if the proper resources are available. To help students, teachers, and researchers push the boundaries of knowledge, OpenAI is investing $50M in research grants, compute money, and API access.
The goal of NextGenAI is to bring together organisations both domestically and internationally in order to accelerate advancement more quickly than any one institution could on its own. This project aims to prepare the next generation to influence AI’s future in addition to fostering the next generation of discoveries.
The Upcoming Generation of AI Executives
The California State University system, Caltech, Duke University, the University of Georgia, Harvard University, Howard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, the University of Mississippi, the Ohio State University, the University of Oxford, Sciences Po, Texas A&M University, Boston Children’s Hospital, the Boston Public Library, and OpenAI are among the founding partners of NextGenAI.
AI is being used by every institution to address high-impact issues, such as redefining education and transforming healthcare. A few samples of their innovative work are as follows:
Accelerating the upcoming wave of scientific discoveries
- While educators use AI to develop enhanced learning models, Ohio State University is employing AI to speed up the disciplines of advanced medicines, manufacturing, energy, mobility, agriculture, and digital health.
- Researchers from Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard University are utilising NextGenAI funding and OpenAI technologies to increase AI alignment with human values in medical decision-making and shorten the time it takes patients to find the correct diagnosis, particularly for uncommon orphan diseases.
- Scientists at Duke University are employing AI to lead metascience research, pinpointing the scientific domains where AI can be most useful.
Developing the future generation’s proficiency with AI
- Texas A&M’s Generative AI Literacy Initiative is being fuelled by NextGenAI materials, which offer practical instruction to improve the ethical application of AI in educational settings.
- Faculty and students at MIT will be able to train and improve their own AI models and create new applications by utilising OpenAI’s computing funding and API.
- In order to educate students for leadership roles in the future, Howard will employ AI to create curricula, test out innovative teaching strategies, enhance university operations, and provide students with practical AI experience.
Considering the future of libraries and universities with AI
- The University of Oxford is employing AI to support a wide range of research goals, instruction, and university operations. Its famous Bodleian Library is digitising rare books and transcribing them using OpenAI’s API, enabling researchers from all over the world to search for centuries-old knowledge.
- In addition to advancing AI-driven solutions that benefit their faculty, students, and the community at large, the University of Mississippi is looking into new methods to incorporate AI into their fundamental missions of education, research, and service.
- The first sizable free municipal public library in America, the Boston Public Library, is utilising artificial intelligence (AI) and digitising public domain works to increase the accessibility of its collection for users from all backgrounds.
Enhancing the Relationship Between Industry and Academics
NextGenAI strengthens the crucial alliance between industry and academia, guaranteeing that the advantages of AI reach labs, libraries, hospitals, and classrooms everywhere.
After the introduction of ChatGPT Edu in May 2024, which made ChatGPT available to all universities, this project furthers OpenAI’s dedication to education. By giving institutions access to OpenAI’s APIs and funds to support vital innovation, NextGenAI supports this endeavour.
NextGenAI is made to help the researcher find a solution, the student learn AI for the future, and the scientist find a treatment.
