A process-analysis technique called life cycle assessment (LCA) is used to assess a product, system, or service’s environmental impact over the course of its whole life cycle. This covers every aspect, including the extraction and processing of raw materials, manufacture, transportation, usage, and end-of-life care (such as recycling and disposal). Through life cycle assessment (LCA), it can quantify emissions at each stage of the hardware manufacturing process, identify the sources of those emissions, determine strategies to minimise them, and monitor progress towards achieving global net-zero emissions.

In order to assess the embodied carbon emissions linked to the supply chain of data centre hardware, such as AI/ML accelerators, compute machines, storage platforms, and networking equipment, the Google Cloud Carbon Footprinting team has created a best-in-class LCA Google methodology.

The methodology is specifically designed for Google Cloud’s data centre technology portfolio and underlying manufacturing production processes, and it complies with international LCA Google standards, ISO 14040/14044. Fraunhofer IZM has also conducted a thorough evaluation of LCA Google approach, guaranteeing its accuracy, completeness, and conformity to industry standards. This makes it possible for Google to precisely account for emissions resulting from the production of different kinds of data centre technology, down to the smallest parts that make up the fleet.

Driving the industry forward

It is leading the way in the creation of highly configurable Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) models by working closely with supply chain partners, academic leaders, and industry colleagues. It can now go beyond generic evaluations with this creative method, which opens the door to the possibility of comprehensive, personalised environmental insights for crucial parts like PCBAs, hard disc drives, semiconductors, and thermal management systems.

LCA Google data gathering by collaborating directly with suppliers to collect primary data in order to achieve unmatched accuracy. This entails recording the direct fluxes that take place during manufacturing, such as the exchange of materials and energy with the environment. These bespoke LCIs are effective instruments that let us monitor environmental impact precisely and go closer to net-zero.

By taking part in a cooperative effort to create uniform LCA Google rules, Google is not only promoting accuracy but also standardisation in the hardware sector. The goal of this project is to develop Product Category Rules (PCRs) that enhance comparability among product evaluations and make primary data collecting easier. This partnership aims to improve the precision and openness of environmental accounting initiatives by expanding upon established ISO standards and harmonising with GHG protocol and Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).

It assessed Tensor Processing Units’ (TPUs’) lifetime environmental impact in a recent LCA Google study. Findings demonstrating that over two generations, more effective TPU hardware design has resulted in a threefold increase in the carbon-efficiency of AI workload were made possible by the introduction of a new metric called Compute Carbon Intensity (CCI). Such life cycle assessment (LCA) studies are essential for comprehending and mitigating hardware’s carbon footprint throughout the ecosystem.
