AMD announced that it has added 5th Gen AMD EPYC Embedded CPUs to its line of x86 embedded CPUs.
The AMD EPYC Embedded 9005 Series CPUs combine cutting-edge computational capability with embedded features to improve system resilience, product longevity, and embedded application development. The established “Zen 5” architecture of these processors provides industry-leading speed and energy efficiency, allowing networking, storage, and industrial edge systems to process more data faster.
The need for improved compute performance in embedded systems is being driven by “AI-driven network traffic, exploding data storage requirements, and the expansion of industrial edge computing, 5th Gen AMD EPYC Embedded Processors offer embedded customers the long product lifecycles, improved system resilience, and leadership performance and efficiency they depend on to design with confidence and guarantee continuous operations in demanding “always-on” environments.
Leadership Core Density, Performance, and Energy Efficiency
With support for core counts ranging from 8 to 192 in a single socket, AMD EPYC Embedded 9005 Series processors are made to power compute-intensive embedded systems. The devices are perfect for network and security firewall platforms, storage systems, and industrial control applications because of their industry-leading core density, which may boost data processing performance by up to 1.3X and 1.6X for networking and storage workloads, respectively.
With a projected 1.3X improvement in socket throughput and 1.3X better performance/Watt than the competition, the new “Zen 5c” core design provides higher throughput with improved energy efficiency. Expanded I/O connectivity, which supports up to 160 PCIe Gen5 lanes with CXL 2.0, and up to 6TB of DDR5 memory per socket allow for high-speed data transfers and storage capacity expansion for networking and storage applications.
Purpose-Built, Application-Specific Features
A variety of cutting-edge embedded capabilities are included in Embedded 9005 Series processors to offer a stable, secure, and long-lasting platform.
Extended Longevity: AMD EPYC Embedded 9005 Series CPUs offer extended 7-year product manufacturing support to meet the longer product lifecycle and operational requirements of embedded markets. This helps system designers ensure long-term product availability by lowering the need for redesign and qualification. In order to guarantee long-term product stability for embedded systems, AMD also intends to increase the design lifetime operation targets from five years for Embedded 9005 Series CPUs that are currently being sampled to seven years for production SKUs. For embedded systems operating mission-critical applications in challenging environments, these extended design lifetime operation targets are essential for reducing unscheduled downtime, repairs, and expensive system replacements.
System Security and Resilience: NTB (Non-Transparent Bridging) is a feature that increases high availability in multi-host fault-tolerant architectures. By facilitating data transmission between two CPUs in active-active setups via PCI Express (PCIe), NTB improves system redundancy and failover capabilities for networking and storage systems, allowing for ongoing operation in the event of a breakdown. By transferring data from DRAM to non-volatile memory in the event of a power outage, DRAM Flush improves dependability in mission-critical storage deployments.
Customers can install a proprietary and secure bootloader to authenticate the platform using dual SPI (serial peripheral interface), guaranteeing a trusted execution environment.
Application development ease: Yocto framework support, which makes it possible to create customized Linux distributions that are suited to the customer’s system, makes embedded system deployments easier. By managing data processing for network and storage workloads in user space drivers, SPDK (Storage Performance Development Kit) and DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) improve system performance.
