Intel Powered AI Platforms May Find Next Olympic Contender

AI platforms

Intel will present fresh, cutting-edge AI experiences based on Intel hardware and software as the Official Worldwide AI Platforms Partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. These experiences will facilitate next-generation interaction for spectators, organizers, athletes, and fans worldwide.

Important applications of AI include:

  • An immersive sports environment where fans can test out cutting edge technology for assessing athletic ability.
  • The first Olympics to include an entire 8K broadcasting experience from start to finish.
  • Improvements in inclusive design in a few Olympic and Paralympic venues.
  • With the motto “Bringing AI Everywhere,” Intel plans to introduce artificial intelligence technology on the largest platform in the world, powered by Intel CPUs.

Sports scouts now have a very difficult time finding potential in rural or remote places due to time, money, and physical constraints. These restrictions have two effects: viewers might never see the greatest players in the world, and a world full of gifted people will never be able to pursue professional sports.

Intel, the Global AI Platform Partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, along with its partners, are working to address this by delivering an AI Platforms technology sports talent detection application.

These issues are addressed by a novel AI talent detection tool developed in partnership with Intel, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Senegal.

The software leverages Intel’s AI Platforms to identify talent through any smartphone with a camera, removing the need for pricey, specialized equipment and giving more people the chance to become future Olympic hopefuls in an effort to level the playing field and increase scouts’ reach.

The technology doesn’t end there. Computer vision analyses the video, and artificial intelligence takes over. Talent scouts are then sent the stats.

It’s difficult to get scouts’ notice with the hopes of breaking into the major sports leagues. It takes luck, money, persistence, and pure genius.

“This artificial intelligence platform for talent identification not only finds latent talent but also fills a gap in the market,” stated Caroline Rhoades, marketing manager for Intel’s Sales, Marketing, and Communications Group for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Intel and the IOC collaborated to launch the app in March with the goal of assisting Senegalese youngsters in identifying potential Olympians.

The country on the west coast of Africa was selected for this endeavor ahead of Senegal’s capital Dakar hosting the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026.

Using the talent identification smartphone app made possible by Intel AI Platforms technology, Intel and IOC representatives visited six villages in Senegal and scored and evaluated the physical prowess of over a thousand eager children hoping to be scouted by the Senegalese National Olympic Committee.

Within minutes, the participants underwent physical and cognitive assessments, which involved analyzing over 1,000 biomechanical data points to assess their speed, acceleration, burst power, agility, and ability to change direction.

“This technology is expected to increase the chances that any prospective athlete can compete globally. according to Rhoades.

Additional Intel-based technologies was used to assist the app in order to deploy the physical testing successfully, even in remote areas:

  • Intel Xeon-powered edge devices for biomechanical data analysis, real-time computer vision, and video processing.
  • Intel Gaudi AI accelerators to increase model training efficiency.
  • Open VINO optimizes AI models.
  • Notebooks with Intel Core Ultra for inferencing in real time.

The difficult work of evaluating, rating, and classifying every video is handled by Intel’s AI platform technology, which gives national governing bodies, coaches, and scouts a quantifiable record of raw physical ability to analyses.

And what about the Senegal program’s outcomes? Forty of the one thousand kids that took part in the program shown notable talent.

AI platform

The process of finding the next Olympic champion has historically been labour intensive and highly dependent on the good eyes of human scouts and coaches. But there’s a revolution coming; technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), has the potential to completely change the way talent is identified. Intel is leading this change, as their AI Platforms shows promise in identifying the upcoming generation of Olympic athletes.

The Problem of Finding Talent

Untapped athletic talent is like a needle in a haystack. Few of the millions of young athletes worldwide can compete at the Olympics. Historically, subjective assessments based on physical characteristics, technical proficiency, and competitive spirit have been the mainstay of talent scouts. These are unquestionably significant aspects, but they frequently fail to capture the whole picture.

AI’s Function

By offering a data-driven and impartial method, AI Platforms is tackling the shortcomings of conventional talent identification. The technology can uncover important details about an athlete’s performance by sifting through enormous volumes of video material and finding metrics and patterns that the human eye might miss.

Video capture

Sports-specific drills and a variety of exercises are filmed athletes executing.

Data extraction

After analyzing the camera footage, Intel’s AI engine extracts important data elements like reaction time, power, speed, agility, and coordination.

Recognition of patterns

The system recognizes particular gait patterns linked to excellent achievement in many sports.

Talent scoring

Based on their performance measurements and pattern recognition analysis, athletes are given a talent score.

Scout support

Talent scouts may find talented athletes and concentrate their attention on the most promising prospects by using the platform’s comprehensive reports and visualizations.

Applications in the Real World

The artificial intelligence platform from Intel has numerous potential uses in a variety of sports. Here are a few illustrations:

Track and field

Identifying athletes with extraordinary power, speed, and endurance through track and field.

Gymnastics

Assessing potential gymnasts by measuring their strength, flexibility, and coordination.

Basketball

Measuring skill, athleticism, and shooting accuracy.

Soccer

Speed, agility, decision-making, and passing accuracy are all examined in football.

Case Study: The Republic of Senegal

Senegal has been the site of one of Intel’s AI platform’s most promising early uses. The technology has been used to discover young athletes with Olympic potential in a variety of disciplines thanks to a partnership between Intel and local sports organizations. The platform has been successful in uncovering a number of talented individuals who have gone on to represent Senegal at international tournaments, yielding outstanding outcomes.

Going Beyond Talent Detection

Although finding talent is essential to the growth of athletes, Intel’s AI platform has other advantages. By analyzing performance data, for instance, the platform can be used to pinpoint problem areas, enhance training regimens, and avoid accidents. Personalized training regimens based on an athlete’s strengths and shortcomings can also be made using the platform.

Issues and Considerations

AI in talent discovery is difficult despite its potential. Consider privacy, ethics, and data security. Most importantly, AI is a tool, not a replacement for human skill. Human intuition and AI-driven analysis work well.

Talent Acquisition Prospects

Though young, artificial intelligence has great potential in sports. Inte’s AI technology improves talent discovery by being more objective and data-driven in finding Olympic champions. AI platform may anticipate seeing even more advanced AI tools appear as technology develops, revolutionizing the recognize and nurture athletic talent.

In conclusion

The way identify and develop athletic talent could be completely transformed by Intel’s AI technology. The platform can help level the playing field and provide more athletes with the chance to realize their full potential by offering an impartial, data-driven approach to talent discovery. They can anticipate a time when artificial intelligence (AI) will be a major factor in determining how sports are shaped as technology advances.
