IBM Db2 12.1.1.0 Released: New Features and Enhancements

IBM Db2 12.1.1.0 is now available: What’s improved and new?

IBM released Db2 12.1, a feature-rich version to improve your database management experience, in October 2024. The Db2 12.1 version includes more than 200 new features, ranging from developer and security improvements to AI-powered query optimisation, with the goal of enabling businesses to sustain contemporary data workloads and satisfy organisational AI and hybrid cloud requirements.

IBM announced the release of modpack 1, which expands upon IBM Db2 12.1’s cloud and query optimisation features. The main features of IBM Db2 12.1.1.0 are as follows:

PureScale on Azure: PureScale is now offered as a self-managed deployment on the Azure cloud.

PureScale on AWS: For quick I/O fencing on AWS, NVMe (non-volatile memory express) reservations are supported.

Reorganising the pureScale index online: In the pureScale environment, read and write access to the underlying table is no longer restricted by the index rebuild that occurs during reorganisation.

Improvements to the AI Query Optimiser: Models are trained more quickly, compactly, and accurately.

Security improvements: To enable the construction and administration of tablespaces inside a storage group, Db2 has added tablespace management power.

Supported Open Data Format (ODF) tables on PPCLE: For Data Lake connection, Db2 Warehouse now supports Open Data Format tables on Linux on Power (PPCLE).

IBM Db2 12.1.1.0 new features

Azure’s pureScale

Using a TCPIP or RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) network, Db2 pureScale is now offered as a marketplace option on Azure cloud as a self-managed setup. There is a “Bring Your Own License” (BYOL) model for deploying Db2 to Azure. In only a few minutes, users may use pre-configured t-shirt sizes to quickly deploy and setup a Db2 pureScale instance on Azure.

AWS’s pureScale

Fast I/O Fencing for NVMe shared storage on AWS is now supported by Db2 pureScale, significantly speeding up recovery in the case of an unforeseen host loss. This allows the maximum availability for the most demanding applications to be supported by the automatically deployed Db2 pureScale clusters.

PureScale’s online index reconfiguration

Achieving the highest availability for the most demanding transactional workloads is the goal of the Db2 pureScale architecture. In pureScale, index rebuilding during reorganisation was previously limited. This modification permits reorganisation maintenance in conjunction with index rebuilds, ensuring that the base table’s data is still available during the index rebuild. Although it is possible to set it to support ALLOW WRITE ACCESS mode, index reorganisation with rebuild now defaults to ALLOW READ ACCESS on the base table.

Improved AI Query Optimiser

By improving the Db2 AI Query Optimiser model performance, this update lowers the average training time and produces more accurate and compact models. For openness in query optimisation, the “Explain” tool has been expanded to provide information about model eligibility and utilisation.

Improvements in security

To enable the construction and administration of tablespaces inside a storage group, Db2 introduced TBSPADM, a tablespace level authority. Database administrators can now assign DBADM and TBSPADM the permission to handle tablespaces for particular users.

Access the PPCLE’s Data Format tables

Open table and open data formats, such as Iceberg, Parquet, AVRO, ORC, and others, can now be integrated (read/written) on Object Storage by users running Db2 Warehouse on Linux on Power systems.
