How EL Gen 3 Tech Enhances Next-Gen QD-OLED Monitors

Gen 4 QD-OLED or 5-Layer Tandem OLED? How QD-OLED Monitors Are Improved with EL Gen 3 Material

Summary

  • Features of the MPG 272URX QD-OLED Samsung’s latest QD-OLED panels (SDC).
  • Light efficiency is increased with EL Gen 3 technology in a 5-layer tandem.
  • With a density of 166 PPI, the 27″ UHD QD-OLED produces higher-quality text and images.

MSI showcased it most recent QD-OLED monitors at CES 2025, showcasing the newest QD-OLED panels from Samsung Display (SDC), referred to as the 5-layer tandem OLED panel with EL Gen 3. On their own, another brand is known as Gen 4 QD-OLED Panel. In comparison to QD-OLED monitors from 2024, light efficiency has increased. Below, MSI will outline the advantages of the 5-layer tandem OLED with EL Gen 3.

The Development Process of QD-OLED

Let’s examine the development of QD-OLED before learning about the 5-layer tandem OLED screen.

The diamond-shaped pixel architecture of the Subpixel Gen 1 QD-OLED screen has caused consumers to express concerns about the clarity of the text. Text may look less crisp than other pixel structures as a result of this layout.

To improve text readability, the pixel pattern was altered in the Subpixel Gen 2 and Gen 3 QD-OLED panels. Their designs are similar even if their layouts are a little different. To put it simply, these enhancements have produced favourable outcomes text seems crisper and more readable than with Subpixel Gen 1 QD-OLED.

Samsung Display (SDC) has been investigating novel materials to boost QD-OLED lifetime and efficiency in addition to subpixel production advancements. Additional efficiency is provided by the Gen 3 Subpixel structure with EL Gen 3.

What Does the 5-Layer Tandem OLED Panel with EL Gen 3 Technology Improve?

The main enhancements result from developments in structure and materials. EL Gen 3 significantly lowers the danger of burn-in by increasing light efficiency by up to 30% as compared to EL Gen 2.

High PPI Enhances Text Clarity

In comparison to 27″ QHD displays, the MPG 272URX QD-OLED reaches an outstanding 166 PPI with EL Gen 3, providing substantially clearer pictures and enhanced text quality. Nevertheless, raising PPI on QD-OLED screens is more difficult than it first appears. Light transmittance is greatly decreased by a higher pixel density, which has an even worse effect on OLED screens. In HDR applications, where OLED panels must achieve high brightness levels (like 1000 nits) to provide attractive pictures with great contrast and dynamic lighting, this is very important.

By increasing light efficiency by as much as 30%, EL Gen 3 successfully mitigates the influence of high-density pixels on light transmittance. Higher PPI may therefore be achieved by the panel without sacrificing brightness or overall display performance.

Figure following shows the pixel density difference between QHD and UHD QD-OLED displays. Compared to the 27″ QHD QD-OLED’s 109 PPI, the 27″ UHD sports 166 PPI.

Zooming in on the 27″ UHD QD-OLED shows clearer text. In contrast to a 27″ QHD QD-OLED, where the text fringing could appear slightly jagged, the text appears smoother. Concerns with text clarity on QD-OLED screens have already been voiced by a few productivity users. But now that the PPI has increased, things have improved.

Does the Pixel Layout of QD-OLED Change This Time?

As previously said, the new panel mainly enhances the materials. Light efficiency is improved with EL Gen 3. The pixel arrangement is identical to that of the Gen 3 QD-OLED, however. For this reason, the EL Gen 3 5-layer tandem OLED panel is not categorised as Gen 4 QD-OLED.

The 5-layer tandem using EL Gen 3 technology continues to advance QD-OLED even while the pixel arrangement remains same. Higher PPI on QD-OLED is made possible by the 30% improvement in light efficiency without sacrificing HDR performance. This is a noteworthy accomplishment.
