State ID In Apple Wallet
California will soon be able to use Apple Wallet to store driver’s licenses and state identification cards.
Californians will have a simple, private, and safe method to present their state IDs and driver’s licenses with an iPhone and Apple Watch thanks to IDs in Apple Wallet.
Soon, Californians will be able to connect their state IDs and driver’s licenses to Apple Wallet, offering a simple and safe method to present these documents with just an iPhone or Apple Watch.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, stated, “We’re excited to be working with the state of California to bring IDs in Apple Wallet to Apple’s home state soon and provide residents with an easy, secure, and private way to present their California driver’s license and state ID in person and in app using Apple Wallet.” “California driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet make ID presentment seamless all with the security built into iPhone and Apple Watch whether using IDs in Apple Wallet to breeze through travel or to securely verify age or identity at businesses.”
When a user has an ID stored in Apple Wallet, they can present it in person at specific TSA security checkpoints and establishments using their iPhone or Apple Watch. They can also utilise certain apps to authenticate their identity or confirm their age.
You don’t need to pull out your actual ID when it’s in Wallet. Just add it to the Wallet app, then use it at specific establishments and locations to provide identification or proof of age. Alternately, bring it through some TSA checkpoints. Introducing your ID has never been simpler.
Simple, safe, and private
Show your ID quickly
Having your ID stored in Wallet makes it easy to provide proof of age and identification when necessary, such as when entering certain pubs, events, festivals, and more.
Easily confirm your identity or age in apps
Adding your ID to Wallet makes it easy to use apps that ask for identity or age verification. It’s so much simpler to rent a car or arrange wine delivery for a party.
Pass past airport security with ease
At some TSA checkpoints, you can use your iPhone or Apple Watch to tap an acceptable driver’s license or state ID that you’ve added to the Wallet app.
Both discreet and open
Your information will only be shared when you give permission using Face ID or Touch ID. You will always be able to see which data you are sharing. When and where you share your information is not visible to Apple or the state agency that issues licenses.
Privacy and Security
Apple Wallet helps safeguard a user’s identity and private data by utilising the privacy and security capabilities included in Apple Watch and iPhone. The state-issuing authority only receives the information required to approve or deny adding a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet when an ID is added.
Only the data required for the transaction is displayed when a driver’s license and state ID are presented in Apple Wallet; users must examine and give permission using Face ID or Touch ID before any additional information is revealed. To present their ID, users do not need to unlock, reveal, or turn over their smartphone.
Apple and other parties cannot access a user’s encrypted ID information unless the user decides to display it on their device. Apple does not view or keep any presentment information that may be linked back to a user, and neither does the state agency that issues state IDs or driver’s licenses know when, where, or with whom a user presents them. Users can use the Find My app to remotely wipe or lock their iPhone or Apple Watch in the event that they misplace them.
Five more states Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, and most recently, Ohio now offer IDs in Apple Wallet.
Some states allow the use of ID cards in Wallets. A few select retailers offer ID verifiers. A minimum of an iPhone 8 running iOS 16.5 or an Apple Watch Series 4 running WatchOS 9.5 or later are needed.
