The astonishing array of cutting-edge hardware included in the ROG Strix SCAR 18 laptop gives it an unbeatable advantage on the battlefield. This beast of a laptop has a powerful Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, and up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, making it capable of providing a brisk and responsive gameplay experience in any game currently available. When a laptop is designed to be able to support a CPU with a maximum thermal design power of 65 watts and a graphics processing unit with a maximum thermal design power of 175 watts, there is a great deal of engineering that goes into the design of the laptop.
ROG Intelligent Cooling is the component that is responsible for the overall success of the system. Under load, central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) generate heat that must be removed from the laptop for these chips to maintain a high level of performance. Having a good cooling system in a laptop does more than just ensure that its main components function to their full potential. The ROG Intelligent Cooling system provides clear benefits to one’s quality of life. It enables the ROG Strix SCAR 18 to function without making any noise when it is being used for light tasks and to remain out of the way when you are gaming. It prevents the surfaces of the laptop from becoming hot and uncomfortable when you touch them. In addition, if you wish to push the laptop to its limits using Turbo mode, ROG Intelligent Cooling has the capacity to deal with the increased amount of heat produced.
Our Intelligent Cooling systems undergo continuous development and refinement as we introduce new generations of ROG laptops. The ROG Strix SCAR 18 is the first product to use several of our most recent technological advancements. These include a full-width heatsink, a tri-fan design, and the application of Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal thermal compound to both the CPU and the GPU. Let’s have a look at the innovative cooling system that has been included in this high-powered gaming laptop. It sets a new bar for laptop cooling.
Stepping it up to the max
The very surface of the CPU and GPU serves as the first line of defense against heat for ROG Intelligent Cooling. We use Thermal Grizzly’s state-of-the-art Conductonaut Extreme, a liquid metal thermal compound, on the ROG Strix SCAR 18 to keep these critical chips up to 15° Celsius lower than with conventional thermal pastes. In contrast to conventional pastes, this indium- and gallium-based liquid won’t dry up and conducts 17 times more heat, allowing the heat generated by these chips to go rapidly and effectively to the cooling solution.
Before the heat is securely expelled from the laptop, it still has a distance to travel. It advances to the next stage thanks to 7 broad heatpipes. We increased the area covered by the heatpipe system on the motherboard for the Strix SCAR 18 from 29% to 33% in order to better handle the heat generated by the video memory and power circuits in addition to the CPU and GPU.
The heatsink and the heat
The heat generated by the ROG Strix SCAR 18’s internal components exits the system through the cooling system. Our laptops, the 2023 Strix SCAR and Strix G, include a large full-width cooling system.
This all-copper system offers a total of 195,509mm2 of surface area, running along the full back of the laptop and including two additional heatsinks and vents along the right and left sides. The increase from the 2022 Strix SCAR 17 is 82.5%. The ultra-thin copper fans on this extra-wide heatsink are so thin—as thin as 0.1mm—that there is less air resistance, allowing the cooling air from the fans to pass through freely. In order to prevent excessive recirculation of hot air, we also positioned the heatsinks as near as possible to the vents themselves.
Achieving perfection
The redesigned heatpipe and heatsink system would have significantly improved the Strix SCAR 18 on their own. But we went a step further by adding a third fan to this laptop’s ROG Intelligent Cooling system.
This third fan, which is near to the device’s center, draws air in through carefully planned cutouts and across the interior wiring. We installed this fan expressly to aid in cooling the machine during extended video rendering or gaming sessions by transferring heat from the GPU to the heatsinks directly.
None other than our improved Arc Flow Fans are the three fans. These compact machines are made to move a lot of air quietly and quietly. In comparison to our previous-generation models, these fans move up to 13% more air thanks to their 84 blades and variable-thickness construction, which tapers down to 0.1mm at the tip. They also have less resonance and turbulence. As soon as the temperature allows, these fans will completely shut off to provide fully silent cooling under light loads. This guarantees that your normal online browsing and light amusement won’t be interrupted.
Even the most powerful laptop cooling system can become clogged with dust and dirt over time. The intake vents’ dust screens help keep dust out, allowing the CPU and GPU to operate more comfortably for years.
You are in charge with Armory Crate and Scenario Profiles
Gamers’ preferences for how they want their devices to function vary, and they may change based on the situation. While you might not care too much about fan noise if you’re playing video games in your room with your headphones on, you do want the laptop to be cool to the touch and you do expect excellent performance. However, you don’t want a noisy device that disturbs folks around you if you’re taking notes in class.
With simple software controls, we guarantee that you have the experience you’re searching for in every circumstance. With just one click, you may switch between the Armoury Crate app’s operating modes and the ideal settings at any given time. Toggle Silent mode to prioritize silent operation when you want to avoid detection. When noise isn’t an issue, Turbo Mode lets your hardware run at peak efficiency, while Performance Mode strikes the perfect balance between power and noise.
Even better, you can set up the ROG Strix SCAR 18 to switch between operating modes based on the app you’re running. Your PC is constantly optimized for the task at hand thanks to a feature called Scenario Profiles, which automatically applies your preferred system settings whenever you run a certain app or group of apps. To understand how to set up Scenario Profiles on your computer, see our complete tutorial.
